Employee Mandatory Compliance Training

Pursuant to the Ethics Commission Reform Act of 2022, all New York State employees are required to complete ethics training every year. 

New hires are required to complete this training within 90 days of date of hire. All other employees are required to complete this training yearly. 

Complete the live Comprehensive Ethics Training Course (CETC) through the NYS Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government.

Type “SUNY Buffalo State University” under Agency and the option will automatically populate underneath. Be sure to click SUNY Buffalo State University" to receive the green check mark next to the name. You also must type in your NYS Employee ID (beginning with N), which can be found in the top left corner of your paycheck in SUNY Self-Service/View Paycheck (see user guide). Then type in your full first and last name and email address and select “Find a Training” to register. Human Resource Management will be notified of all course completions by employees, so there is no need to email your certificate of completion to us. 

Supervisors are asked to ensure their employees are allotted time to complete this mandatory training. The deadline to complete this training is November 30th, 2026. 

New York State enacted legislation in 2018 requiring all employers, including Buffalo State University, to ensure that their employees complete sexual harassment prevention training annually. An incident of workplace violence could have lifelong consequences for employees and their families. Human Resource Management offers Workplace Violence Prevention Training for all employees. Participation in this training is mandated for all public employees under NYS Labor Law §27b.  NYS Labor Law §27b also mandates that all public employees participate in annual workplace violence prevention training. Employees must complete the web-based workplace violence prevention training. If you have any questions about the content in this training, please reach out to Human Resource Management, located in Cleveland Hall, 403. Training topics covered include:

• recognizing warning signs for potential violence
• assessing risk in various work settings
• what to do and what not to do if presented with a violent situation
• campus resources available to prevent violence.

In the 2024 State of the University agenda, SUNY announced every faculty and staff member, including student employees at System Administration and on all SUNY campuses will be required to complete Title VI and Title IX training. Federal Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that allows parents access to their children's educational records. When a student turns 18 years old, or enters a post-secondary institution (at any age), the rights under FERPA transfer from the parent to the student. New York State Education Law §6438-d (Beau’s Law), effective July 1, 2026, requires institutions to publicly display their policy for notifying a parent, guardian, or emergency contact when a student under the age of 21 is involved in certain alcohol- or controlled substance-related violations or incidents.

The university exercises its authority under FERPA and NYS Education Law in a manner that limits disclosures to information reasonably necessary to address the circumstances presented.

At Buffalo State University, federal law, state law and regents policy govern access and release of student records. These forms must be completed by the registered student as outlined on the Registrar's website. Additional information on FERPA.

The Information Security Awareness Training is meant to ensure that employees are educated on the importance of information security and the risks of poor information security protocols and processes. 

The Information Security Awareness Training will cover areas of data security and safety that everyone needs to know, from how to create secure passwords to how to avoid becoming the victim of a social engineering attack.

Hazard Communication and Right-to-Know training is intended for Buffalo State University's workforce and provides information employees need to know concerning the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard, also called HCS or HazCom, and the New York State Right-to-Know Law.  For more information, please visit Buffalo State's Environmental Health and Safety website.
