This program is an official "forgiveness" of part of the tuition (excluding fees) for up to two courses a semester taken at a State-operated campus in the SUNY system. The percentage of tuition that can be waived is determined by the number of applicants and available funding. The applicant must be admitted (or readmitted) to a participating school on a matriculated or non-matriculated basis. Please download and complete the application.
Eligibility Requirements:
You may apply for tuition assistance which provides up to 50% waiver of tuition based on available funding if you meet one of the following criteria*:
- Full-time Buffalo State faculty, professional, or classified employees with at least six months/one semester of continuous service,
- Part-time and/or temporary Buffalo State faculty, professional, or classified employees who are employed at least half time (faculty must teach at least two courses in the semester) with at least six months/one semester of continuous service,
- Full-time Research Foundation (RF) employees, provided they work on the Buffalo State campus with at least six months of continuous service.
*Eligible employees on authorized leave without pay, continue to be eligible for tuition assistance. If the employee resigns during the semester in which course work is taken or fails to complete the course work, the waiver will be void, and the employee will be responsible for reimbursing tuition assistance to the appropriate Student Accounts Office.
Program funds may be used for courses at State-operated SUNY campuses only. Community colleges and private institutions are not eligible. Eligible employees may apply for a 50 percent waiver of SUNY tuition for up to two courses per semester, to a maximum of 15 credit hours per academic year. Tuition assistance is limited to regular in-state undergraduate or graduate tuition rates. The level of support may be adjusted when necessary if funding is not adequate to cover applications received.
Procedures:
Complete the SUNY B-140W Application for Tuition and Fee Assistance Form, obtain supervisor's signature, and return form to Human Resource Management by email at hr@buffalostate.edu by the following deadline dates:
- Fall semester by September 30
- Spring semester by February 28
- Summer session by August 1
*RF employees will need to obtain supervisor's signature and signature from RF Human Resources Department before emailing the form to hr@buffalostate.edu.
*Classified employees who are eligible for other tuition assistance such as NYS & CSEA Partnership for Education and Training should attach documentation verifying any other support received (or application rejected for lack of funding).
Important:
Applications for tuition assistance will be processed shortly after the above deadline dates for each semester. Please note that the employee is responsible for paying tuition according to instructing campus regulations to avoid late fees or cancellation of registration. Student Accounts offices at SUNY campuses will credit amount of approved tuition waivers when processed/approved; tuition waiver amount can be applied toward tuition for the following semester, or a refund of any overpayment can be requested from the instructing campus Student Accounts Office.

The NYS and CSEA Partnership for Education and Training is available to eligible CSEA-represented New York State executive-branch employees can apply for two tuition benefits per calendar year. Eligible employee can also receive reimbursement for an unlimited number of credit-by-examinations (up to $210 per examination) and reimbursement of one certification and licensure exam fee (up to $300) in addition to their standard benefits. Education Advisement Services are available to CSEA-represented State employees by calling 1-800-253-4332 or 1-518-486-7814. This program provides financial support for approved educational activities on a reimbursement basis. Eligible employees are reimbursed at the rate of 75%, up to a maximum annual fiscal year reimbursement of $2,000. In addition to the tuition reimbursement program, reimbursement for certification and licensure exam fees is also available along with Public Service Workshops.
This program provides reimbursement at 100% of the covered tuition expense up to $1,200 per fiscal year (4/1 - 3/31). Additionally, employees may be reimbursed for book expenses up to a maximum of $250 per course. Please download and complete the application.
