How often do I need to take the training?
New York State requires employees complete training on an annual basis. New employees must complete within 30 days of employment and, if started prior to July 1st, again during the annual fall training. Employees who start after July 1st will wait to complete their required compliance training until the fall compliance announcement.
For the Comprehensive Ethics Training Course (CETC), new employees must complete the live training within the first 90 days of employment. Employees only take this training once per year as it is tracked by the NYS Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government. Every other year, employees are eligible to complete the on-demand refresher training. For 2026, Buffalo State University is requiring all employees to complete the live CETC.
If I you have completed these trainings as a new hire (prior to July 1st) in the past year, do I need to complete again:
Yes. If you were hired prior to July 1st, 2026 and completed the training as a new hire, you will need to complete again to fulfill the annual compliance requirement. If you were hired after July 1st, 2026, you were not required to complete within 30-days. Instead, you will complete the fall annual compliance training, which will fulfill your requirement.
Is there a specific grade or percentage needed to pass the training?
For some courses, there will be built in quizzes to check your understanding of the content. However, there is no limit to how many times you can answer the questions, so can take the quiz as many times as you need. For the policies, we created an acknowledgement statement you must answer to fully complete the training.
If you completed training through a different employer, including SUNY, do you have to complete Buffalo State’s training?
Yes, you need to complete Buffalo State’s training modules. As Buffalo State's policies and procedures are different from other employers, it is important for all Buffalo State employees to be aware of our internal processes. We will not accept certificates of completion from any other employer, including another SUNY, to count towards your completion.
The Comprehensive Ethics Training Course (CETC) is the only training that is the same for all New York State employees, so whether you complete the training through the NYS Commission of Lobbying and Government or Human Resource Management at Buffalo State, we will be able to identify who has completed the training.
Do employees who are on leave have to take the training?
Employees who are on leave must complete the training when they return to the workplace. Taking the training is a work-related activity, and we cannot require employees to work while they are on leave.
